Zest Innovation
When our existing Mobile Mechanic client spoke to us about diversifying his business there were several options he had thought about so we started to understand the options and then decide on the best course of action.
The first aspect was to get some further insight into the potential of this service opportunity. Fortunately, he was in a good position to get information by already being in the automotive business. Initial indications were that mobile tyre fitting would be a profitable new venture but as with any business - profits come from customers, and if you don't have customers you don't have a business.
Clearly, if we were to be the 'new kid on the block' we would end up taking potential customers from other businesses who had been established as mobile tyre fitters in Reading for a number of years and therefore to have a standing start always has its challenges.
However, he was in the fortunate position of not having a standing start. When we drilled into his existing mobile client business we established that there were already potential type change opportunities from existing customers. There was also the option to service customers remotely by just offering a mobile tyre repair service which had a much lower capital outlay.
As tyres are always checked as part of an MOT or service there were already many existing customers who following their car's service would then have to go somewhere else to get their tyres changed if that had come up as a mandatory or advisory requirement as part of their service.
Okay, so most services and MOTs were carried at the workshop rather than remotely but at least that meant that there were already clients who would want the convenience of getting their tyres changed before driving their cars away following their MOT. Straight away there was an opportunity to utilise the mobile tyre-fitting vehicle equipment including the mobile wheel alignment, without even driving it outside!
We also researched on behalf of our client to explore supply options and used tyre disposal options as all this fed into the business plan we put together with a budget projection based on certain numbers of tyres being fitted each month for the first twelve months.
We also explored other options to get new customers and found a few existing online tyre providers who needed a network of fitters to install the tyres locally for customers who bought their tyres directly from them. Whilst the margins were not as exciting this would still provide an excellent source of new clients with minimal initial outlay. As any business knows, the hardest part is getting new customers and once you have successfully fulfilled the needs of a few customers they will act as a basis for referrals both online and through word of mouth. Often businesses may overlook the indirect benefits certain customer profiles may bring to a business. By only judging customers on their own profit and potentially dismissing them you run the risk of losing a marketing vehicle that can bring other higher-value customers.
