Starting a Mobile Mechanic Business in the UK

Getting a Mobile Mechanic Business Running Smoothly

Starting a new business is never an easy thing and with all business ventures, the key is getting new customers and developing a good reputation.

When we began discussions with a budding mechanic in Reading he was currently working at a garage of a car manufacturer so had excellent training experience but was keen to start his own business. He used savings from working at the garage to buy his own van and start his own business. He worked in the hours outside his regular job and also bought the odd low-value car to do up to supplement things.

This meant working long hours but was a sensible approach as without a decent volume of business there was no way he could give up his 9 to 5 job.

When he discussed his situation with us at Zest Innovation the key was getting him regular enquiries and an online presence. We set up a website, and associated social media profiles and set about raising his profile to generate new business enquiries.

Growing online enquiries is a gradual thing and this worked perfectly for a while as a gradual increase of new business enquires started to come in. After a few months, the inevitable challenge arrived - there were too many enquiries to handle in the limited hours he had available and he was working ridiculous hours to try not to let any customer down. Enquiries ranged from simple battery replacements to clutch repairs and services. When new equipment meant they could offer a car air con regas service we were able to focus on generating business for this.

Whilst this was very hard to juggle this was the tipping point he wanted to get to as independent earnings meant it was now feasible to go solo. He was also able to rent a small garage too. This was the start and the business has gone from strength to strength with the odd hiccup along the way as every business will face. With the phone line set up, we were able to coach on call handling too so helping with the customer experience journey too which is vital for any business - as first impressions last.

The business now employs an additional staff member and we continue working together to expand the services range and develop strategies to increase the share of wallet from existing customers with additional marketing approaches. The newest venture is to add mobile tyre fitting in Reading which is a perfect fit.

In addition to Reading a more established mobile mechanic pairing covering Coventry and surrounding areas wanted to increase their online presence and number of enquiries.

They had been paying other well known online advertisers but were not thrilled with what they were receiving. We discussed their particular areas of expertise and set about creating a website and online presence to bring them the type of mobile mechanic jobs, that provided good business for them. One example being their auto electrician expertise and wanting to focus on clutch replacement enquiries.

At Zest Innovation we can facilitate discussions with these mobile mechanics to share tips and best practise too and even see if further collaborate can provide some cost savings along the way.

So if you are a budding or considering starting a mobile mechanic business don't hesitate to get in touch.
